INTRODUCTION: Good Writing and Research Skills are complementary to a good college and higher education Colbourne College is concerned about our students’ writing and research abilities as a key performance indicator to their ability to meet the criteria for academic and professional success. This expectation is not limited to English Classes but is integrated, expanded and reinforced across the curriculum for all courses we deliver and assess. To improve our students writing and research skills ENG 100 College English is taught in semester one of year one and compulsory for all new students entering Colbourne College. It provides a critical avenue for students to understand about and engage in critical thinking, essay writing and research activities. To demonstrate learning they will write research essays that analyze problems, review appropriate literature, and synthesize what is learnt with their own ideas. § Setting and communicating programme prerequisites for good writing and research skills before students are permitted entry to commence standard courses. To prepare its freshmen in developing this skill and meeting the improving criteria of the college, all students entering Colbourne since September 2013 are required to earn a Pass Grade in the Induction Module. The induction module presents the opportunity for the students to learn and be tested in program and academic rules (Task 1 and 2), and in Academic Writing and Research Projects –Harvard Referencing (Task 3-4). The Induction Module Task 1 and 2 are independent study with online testing. Task 3-4 are hosted online through iTutor – Colbourne Online Classroom. Online classes are guided learning that requires the student to attend and participate in timetabled lecture sessions and discussions hosted online. Task 3 and 4 are tested through online quizzes with automated grading and a final essay along with a personal statement collected and assessed by the faculty/appointed examining committee for admission. § Communicating and institutionalizing the expected standards/rubrics exemplifying good writing and research levels as guide/criteria for the faculty and courses examiners (internal and external) to use in the assessment of students’ works. We will design Faculty and Examiners workshops in August to define the requirements, and to identify and improve the college’s ability to quality assure these improved standards. Good Writing is a MUST for college – higher education Writing is an important skill that all students are expected to develop in order to be successful in the college and beyond in the professional world of business. Writing well will enable our students to effectively convey their thoughts, opinion and facts in a simple and organized way. Our stress for good writing and research skills are attributed to;
Good Writing is a MUST for business § Good writing skills make students more employable both for getting good internship positions as well as after completing college. Employers are demanding good verbal, analytical, research and writing skills. These mixes of skills are important in all profession as good communication and good decision-making are critical to business success. Good writing and critical thinking skills enable good and effective communication while research skills directly aids correct decision making. § The afore requirements of the College to institutionalise good writing and research as core skills possessed by our students are to enable that our students succeed here in college as well and in securing good jobs in the future. § These as these skills are necessary for making presentations, preparing research proposals and research drafts, writing reports and emails, writing examinations, preparing resumes and personal statements as well as in the interviews and jobs. These are all activities from day one of college as well as in the profession that students must do. In short, if our students can’t write they likely will not succeed in college or in business. It is therefore important for us to help them to develop these skills that are crucial for them to succeed both in college and in future job situations. Writing skills for me will help to promote clarity therefore enhancing understanding on the other end of the communication channel. It will also help me to feel confident if others are to read my work; poor writing skills enables negative impressions to be cast on the writer.

Writing is one of the outmost skill that I need to develop in order for me to be able to give an expression of my ideas, thoughts or opinion in an effectively way. Learning to writing effectively help in many different ways. It helps me to express what I've learnt on paper and helps in communication.

You will need to write resumes, application letters (for most jobs proposals and reports depending on the job you will be doing.
